NELFUND Student Loan Programme Crosses ₦242 Billion Mark

Nigeria’s student loan programme has reached a scale few predicted when it launched two years ago, with disbursements now touching over a quarter trillion naira and sparking debate about who it truly serves.

Key Details

  • Beneficiaries: 1,388,592 students as of 15 April 2026
  • Total disbursed: ₦242.4 billion since May 2024
  • Breakdown: ₦128.8bn to institutions for tuition; ₦77.4bn directly to students as upkeep
  • Eligible institutions: 265 public tertiary institutions nationwide
  • Coverage: Tuition paid to schools; ₦20,000 monthly upkeep to individuals

The Scale of Growth

By March 2026, the scheme had attracted 1.7 million applications and disbursed over ₦206 billion to more than 1.1 million students — a trajectory one financial expert described as “hockey-stick growth.” As the 2025/2026 academic cycle reaches its peak, over 2 million Nigerian higher education students are seeking clarity on payment timelines and repayment terms.

Regional Distribution Controversy

Out of the 1.38 million beneficiaries, over 58 percent are from the northern part of the country, a figure that has drawn commentary online, with critics questioning equitable distribution across geo-political zones.

Political Dimension

NELFUND beneficiaries in Anambra State publicly endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term in office, donating a total of ₦10.7 million towards the purchase of his 2027 expression of interest form. Critics argue the gesture conflates student relief with political mobilisation.

What Students Still Face

Despite the programme’s scale, analysts warn of a deeper gap. Nigeria currently has over 10.5 million out-of-school children — children growing up without a First School Leaving Certificate or SSCE, permanently locked out of university and locked out of NELFUND.

Analysis

NELFUND is genuinely transformative for the students it reaches. But its reach is structurally limited to those already inside the system. The larger crisis — of children who never make it to tertiary level — remains unaddressed by the fund’s mandate.

Summary

With ₦242 billion disbursed and over 1.3 million beneficiaries, NELFUND is Nigeria’s most consequential social intervention in recent memory. Whether it becomes a foundation for broad-based educational equity or a politically curated benefit will depend on governance decisions in the years ahead.
