Opposition parties in the 2027 presidential election are planning to united behind a single presidential candidate in order to garner enough votes to oust Ahmed Bola Tinubu.
The opposition parties, including the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Allied Peoples Movement, APM, a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the Social Democratic Party, SDP, will be meeting today, Monday, August 31, to unite against Tinubu’s 2027 Presidential return.
Current opposition party presidential candidates positioned to challenge President Bola Tinubu are Atiku Abubakar (African Democratic Congress – ADC) who is running with former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi as his vice-presidential candidate and Peter Obi, the former Anambra State Governor and 2023 frontline contender (Nigeria Democratic Congress – NDC)] who is paired with former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as running mate. Obi’s party is aggressively building strategic local structures, toward a repeat of 2023 performance.
Abubakar Atiku has recently, publicly stated that the 2027 race represents his “last shot” at the presidency and will not step down for Peter Obi, whom he claims shot to limelight because he was hand-picked as Atiku’s Vice Presidential candidate under Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP).
Clearly, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) holds a distinct structural advantage with control over 30 out of 36 state. Observers however believe in the possibility of an upset in the elections. The moves and politics towards the election have been a mix of ruthless intrigues, desperate pursuit for relevance, power and influence.
Public affairs analysts have explained that a divided opposition will always strengthen the incumbent. And without a consensus opposition presidential candidate, beating incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the January 16, 2027, presidential election will be a tall dream.
