Court Rules Jonathan Eligible for 2027 Presidential Bid

Nigeria’s former president Goodluck Jonathan has been cleared by a Federal High Court in Abuja to contest the 2027 presidential election, ending months of speculation over his eligibility.

Justice Peter Lifu dismissed a suit filed by lawyer Johnmary Jideobi, who argued that Jonathan had already exceeded the constitutional limit of two terms, having served from 2010 to 2015. The judge described the case as an “abuse of court process” and ordered the plaintiff to pay ₦20 million in damages to Jonathan, alongside ₦1 million to the Attorney General of the Federation.

Political Context

  • A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, has already endorsed Jonathan as its sole candidate for the 2027 race.
  • The suit had sought to prevent the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from accepting Jonathan’s nomination.
  • The court ruled that Jonathan’s completion of his predecessor’s term in 2010 does not count against the constitutional two-term limit.

What This Means

Jonathan’s clearance paves the way for a dramatic political comeback. His candidacy could reshape the PDP’s internal dynamics, with rival aspirants likely to challenge the factional endorsement.

Observers say his return may reignite debates about Nigeria’s democratic rotation of power, governance record, and constitutional interpretation.

Analysis

  • Legal precedent: The ruling reinforces the view that completing another leader’s tenure does not count as a full presidential term.
  • Political strategy: Jonathan’s re-entry could be seen as an attempt by the PDP to leverage his national profile and past governance experience.
  • Risks: His candidacy may polarise opinion, with critics warning it undermines leadership renewal, while supporters argue it offers stability.

With the court’s decision, Jonathan now stands legally free to pursue the presidency in 2027, setting the stage for one of Nigeria’s most closely watched political contests in recent years.
